If you're curious about why your eyelashes feel unusual right now, you're not the only one experiencing this.
It turns out we've entered the peak eyelash-shedding season, and there's a scientific explanation for finding lashes on your pillow and in the sink.
Just as we lose more hair in spring and autumn, our eyelashes undergo an annual shedding cycle too. So, there's no need to worry if your mascara isn't looking its best at the moment.

What causes eyelash shedding?
According to superintendent pharmacist Ana Carolina Goncalves at pharmica.co.uk, it's normal for eyelashes to shed during spring and autumn.
"While extensive research on seasonal eyelash shedding is limited, hormonal changes and environmental factors might play a role," she tells Tyla.

"For instance, variations in daylight exposure can influence the body's hormone production, like prolactin, affecting the hair growth cycle. This might lead to more lashes entering the telogen (shedding) phase.
"The effects of hay fever and other allergens should not be underestimated either. Spring brings higher pollen levels, which can irritate the eyes and dry the surrounding skin.
"This irritation can weaken the follicles that hold eyelashes in place, and combined with rubbing the eyes due to discomfort, lashes may fall out more frequently.

"Additionally, individuals might unknowingly contribute to eyelash weakening by altering their skincare or eyecare routines.
"In spring, people often switch to products like cosmetics with SPF. For those with sensitive skin, these changes can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions, increasing the risk of eyelash loss."
Eyelash shedding isn't usually a cause for concern, unless you're losing more than five a day. If so, there might be other underlying factors. Numerous reasons could be responsible for eyelash loss, from expired makeup or lash extensions to improper cleansing or nutritional deficiencies. You can reach out to your GP if you're worried.
